This little girl portrait in oil was one of those happy encounters for an oil portrait painter. I went up to Minnesota a few times over the years to photograph a client’s grandchildren for small head-and-shoulder watercolor portraits that I was making of each of them. (I also ended up painting the grandparents too. You can see these portraits, #8 and #12, here: Oil Portraits: Men and Women Gallery) On this visit I stayed a few days and Amanda visited often. One time she bounced in wearing a magnificent white lace dress that a friend of her mother’s had made for her. She was a vibrant, endearing, free-spirited 2½ year old! I asked Grandmother as well as Amanda herself if I could photograph her for an oil portrait. What fun we had! For many of the pictures, she raised the top layer of her dress over her head in glee. Look at her here still clutching it.
When the painting was done, her mother wrote me, “Thank you so much for Amanda’s beautiful painting! We can’t wait to get it hung on the wall! We have the perfect place for it!” Grandmother and the rest of the family were thrilled too.
